Stockholm car rental FAQs
The minimum age to rent an Avis car in Stockholm and the rest of Sweden is 19. Age restrictions also vary by vehicle and some selected car groups are not available to drivers under the age of 25.
There is currently no maximum age for hiring a rental car, so long as you have had a full, valid, licence for at least 1 year. Some additional steps may be required for those who are over the age of 75 on the date of the scheduled return.
To hire a car in Stockholm, Sweden, you just need to bring your:
- Driving licence
- The credit card used to make your booking (if it's a high value vehicle two payment cards must be provided, one of which needs to be a credit card),
- Proof of any discount (such as a frequent flyer or Avis Preferred card),
- Photo ID for international rentals (such as a passport or driving licence) taken in the last 10 years.

The city has distinct districts each with their own character and attractions. Start your tour with a stroll from Stockholm Central Station over the bridge to Gamla Stan, the ‘old town’ with its narrow winding streets and famous Christmas markets. Along the waterfront don’t miss major attractions including Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum and the Royal Palace.
Stockholm is also a popular shopping city. Iconic Swedish destinations include NK on Hamngatan and Åhléns City near Sergel's square. If you are looking for smaller boutiques, head to Södermalm, for high fashion, vintage, decor and much more.
Head to the island of Djurgården in your rental car for a walk, Gröna Lund amusement park, Skansen open-air museum and zoo, the Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum or Rosendal Castle and Rosendal Garden. Or explore further afield by heading to Sigtuna or Mariefred.
Recommended day trips from Stockholm
From stunning islands to lakes and forests, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to exploring the region around Stockholm by car. Stockholm is well served by a good road network and the city is within easy reach of other major centres like Uppsala to the north Norrköping to the south and Örebro to the west. For the ultimate road trip adventure and one of the best drives from Stockholm, head north around the Gulf of Bothnia to Sundsvall, a 235 mile epic drive through the Swedish countryside, passing mountains and lakes and stopping off in cities like Uppsala and Galve. While the route along the E4 is straightforward, the scenery is breathtaking and in just over 4hrs you’ll arrive at Sundsvall, a city with an industrial history but today as famous for its food culture and its hiking.
