Plan your journey from Béziers Train Station
Béziers Train Station is located on the southern edge of the town. Pick up your Avis car hire from here and you can drive into the centre of Béziers in moments.
It’s impossible to visit Béziers without noticing the huge canal that intersects the town. Called Canal du Midi, this is actually a Unesco World Heritage Site. It was designed by Paul Riquet in the 17th century who had the ambition to connect the Mediterranean with the Atlantic via the waterway. Lazy days spent strolling the canal and popping into the small cafes on its banks are ones well spent.
In the medieval streets of the Old Town, you’ll feel as though you’ve found yourself transported back 500 years. In fact, you’ll be able to see street signs in Occitan, the local ancient language that’s still taught to children in Béziers today. For retail therapy, Rue 4 Septembre, Rue Mairan, and Rue Françoise are the main shopping streets with everything from fashion boutiques to contemporary design stores.
If you want to eat where the locals do, head to La Gargote des Halles, a bistro and wine bar where it’s easy to spend hours ordering small plates of chorizo, oysters, and local cheeses while chatting with the friendly owner.
