While Cahors is a quaint and charming town, its position in central south-west France allows for more discovery of this incredible corner of the world.
Toulouse
An hour-and-a-half drive south on the A62, the city of Toulouse is a stark change of pace from quiet Cahors. France’s fourth largest metropolitan area, it’s a hub of space exploration and education, with one of the nation’s largest universities located here. The Cité de l’Espace looks into the city’s space endeavours, and is a great place to visit with children. Toulouse also boasts two Unesco World Heritage Sites – Saint-Sernin Basilica and the Canal du Midi - among various pretty squares, architecture, and fountains.
Sarlat-la-Canéda
Just over an hour north on the D6 and D46, the intimate town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is extremely popular among tourists in the region. Seemingly frozen in time, the preserved medieval town is full of cafes, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. Whilst you’re here, visit the Cathédrale St-Sacerdos and the Place du Marché aux Oies - a pretty square with a life-size statue of three geese in its centre.
Rocamadour
Only an hour north on the D32 through the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, this town hangs dramatically on a gorge overlooking the Dordogne river. The town’s former abbey and pilgrimage site have given way to tourism, with tiny streets and beautiful views over the countryside from the church above on offer.
From Cahors, south-west France is within your reach. All you need to do is pick up your Avis rental from the Cahors Train Station, and drive.
