About Larnaca Airport

Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is the largest airport in Cyprus and welcomed more than 8 million passengers in 2024.

First established in the 1930s as a military airfield, it opened as an international airport in 1975 and today serves 83 destinations in 36 countries mainly across Europe and the Middle East.

Thanks to its wide appeal from stunning beaches to a rich history and mediterranean culture, Cyprus is growing in popularity and the airport is going through expansion and redevelopment with the goal of handling 12 million visitors a year. Plans include extending the state-of-the-art terminal building to shopping and leisure facilities.

The airport is located on the coast just southwest of Larnaca with good road access via the A3, B4 and A5 motorways.

Tips for driving in Larnaca

If you are driving in Larnaca, Cyprus for the first time, make sure you familiarise yourself with Cyprus driving rules before picking up your car. Some key road rules in Cyprus include driving on the left, as in the UK and overtaking on the right. Dipped headlights must be used in poor daylight visibility when driving on motorways, dual carriageways and rural roads. Mobile phones can only be used as a built-in audio device. It is forbidden to use the car horn in a built-up area unless in danger and eating and drinking while driving is prohibited.

How to get from Larnaca Airport to Larnaca

From the Avis car park at Larnaca Airport to the centre of Larnaca is a drive of 8.1km which will take around 15min depending on the time of day. Head northeast from the airport and take the B4 following signs to the centre of the city.

Things to do in Larnaca

Larnaca is the third largest city in Cyprus, located on the island’s southern coastline. While the town itself makes an excellent base for exploring the whole island, it also has plenty to offer. Take a walk through time by visiting St Lazarus Church and the Kamares Aqueduct or enjoy a stroll along the main promenade with its palm trees, cafes and bars. Dive into the old Turkish quarter or go shopping in the old market with its craft shops. Besides its wide selection of tourist attractions, it also has a great choice of pristine beaches nearby, so make sure you make a stop at palm tree-lined gems such as Mackenzie Beach and Finikoudes Beach. For those who love nature and tranquillity, a short drive west from the centre brings you to Larnaca Salt Lake where you can look out for pink flamingos and visit the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque.

Recommended day trips from Larnaca Airport

With its fusion of stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, ancient history, vibrant cities and mouthwatering cuisine, Larnaca and its surrounding areas have long been a go-to destination for many people and when it comes to deciding what to see and do, there really is something for everyone.

Ayia Napa

If you are travelling further afield, it’s likely you’ll need to use the A3, which is the main access road to and from the airport. For anyone seeking the bright lights of Ayia Napa and Protaras, stay on the northeast bound A3 until you see signs for your destination (in around 45-50 minutes).

Limassol

Heading west to Limassol? You’ll need to exit the A3 onto the A5 and then take the A1. You’ll reach this popular resort in less than 45 minutes.

Mount Olympus and Nicosia

Journey inland on quiet country roads to trundle through gently rolling landscape and sleepy villages such as Lefkara and Kornos. Here you’ll come across deep-rooted traditions such as lace making, embroidery and pottery. Continue west off the beaten track to take in Mount Olympus - the island’s highest peak - and the lush interiors of Paphos Forest or keep heading north to check out the island’s capital, Nicosia.
