The state of Baden-Württemberg is brimming with natural and historic gems waiting to be discovered. Home to the famous Black Forest, romantic Heidelberg and bustling cities such as Mannheim and Stuttgart, it’s no surprise it’s one of Germany’s top tourist destinations.
Tübingen
Under an hour’s drive from Stuttgart Train Station is the charming town of Tübingen. With its old shuttered buildings, cobblestone streets and historic monuments, arriving here really feels like stepping back in time. Tübingen Castle is a must-see, while it’s easy to spend an afternoon at one of the many pavement cafes or sifting through the specialist shops.
Heidelberg
Heidelberg is one of Germany’s most iconic destinations and is around a 90-minute drive (via the A81 and A6) from Stuttgart. Heidelberg Castle is its top draw, often hailed as the most impressive fortification in Europe. The historic city centre is also delightful and highlights include the Town Hall and Old University Building.
Baden-Baden
If you’re in search of rejuvenation, travel to Baden-Baden – just over an hour from Stuttgart. Located in the foothills of the Black Forest, the spa town boasts a number of attractions. Topping the list is the Fabergé Museum, housing an extensive collection of jewellery and gems, closely followed by Stiftskirche – the pink, Romanesque church – plus the ruins of Roman baths. All worth exploring.
