Plan your journey from Guingamp Train Station

Guingamp boasts architecture from many different eras. The best place to appreciate the diversity of the buildings is by venturing to the central square known as Place du Guingamp, where medieval timber-framed houses stand next to 18th century hotels and court buildings made of grey granite. Guingamp Cathedral, believed to date back to the 11th century, can also be seen in the background.

Don’t miss the majestic Fountain of la Plomée, featuring beautiful mythical and religious sculptures. This magnificent piece, originally erected in the 15th century and redesigned in the 17th century, is regarded as the city’s emblem. If you’re here at the weekend, the Place du Guingamp becomes a lively marketplace on a Saturday with stalls selling local produce and other wares.

Besides the cathedral, another historic landmark that shapes the skyline is the Château de Guingamp – a medieval castle that originated in the 11th century, but has been rebuilt over the years. The grounds surrounding the castle are perfect for tranquil walks.

Guingamp has a vibrant arts scene that can be enjoyed with a visit to the Ploum Expo gallery or by seeing a dance, music or theatre performance at the Théâtre du Champ au Roy.

After exploring the city centre, it’s time to venture further in your Avis rental car to see what lies beyond Guingamp.

Beyond Guingamp

Beautiful scenery dotted with intriguing towns and villages is waiting to be discovered on road trips from Guingamp. This is the home of scenic drives.

Paimpol

Defined by a picturesque harbour and quaint traditional houses, the town of Paimpol provides the perfect day trip from Guingamp. Top sights include the Musée de la Mer, where you can learn all about the history of Paimpol’s port. To retreat to nature, head west along the D786 to the stunning botanical gardens of Jardins de Kerdalo.

Another must-see attraction is the intriguing 13th century Beauport Abbey. This listed historic monument is open to the public and features peaceful grounds incorporating walled gardens and orchards overlooking the sea.

Treguier

Famed for being the birthplace of St Yves, the patron saint of lawyers (and of course, for being an incredibly pretty destination), Treguier is a characterful town brimming with historic architecture. Camera at the ready for the grand gothic cathedral and fabulous 17th century timber-framed houses.

The most renowned of these houses was once home to Ernest Regan – a leading philosopher and religious scholar. This has now been transformed into a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work. Strolling down to the harbour and taking in the charming views is a must.

With an Avis rental car, you’re free to explore the ancient heart and scenic surrounds of Guingamp at your leisure. If you haven't driven in this part of the world before, it's worth familiarising yourself with the French road rules before travelling.
